Tulane University

Overview

Tulane University is a private research university in New Orleans, Louisiana. The school began as a medical institution and eventually evolved into a university. The school was established in 1834 in order to train physicians to treat the multiplying cases of smallpox, yellow fever, and cholera in the United States. Tulane was the South's first medical school and 15^th medical school in the United States.

Today, Tulane University is highly competitive and features programs in all disciplines including liberal arts and engineering. The university features multiple campuses throughout New Orleans, including a health sciences campus, primate research center, science and engineering building, and law school. The University offers study abroad programs for undergraduates and law students.

Academics

Tulane University includes ten schools. All undergraduates are enrolled in the Newcomb-Tulane College division. Graduate programs are available in the following disciplines:

As undergraduates and graduates, students must satisfy several core requirements. Many of these requirements involve public service and internships. Tulane has a strong research focus in its academics. The university receives hundreds of millions of dollars for research funding.

Admissions and Scholarships

Admission to Tulane University is highly competitive. Less than one-third of applicants are admitted. Many students are from outside New Orleans and Louisiana. Several merit scholarships are available for outstanding applicants. These scholarships cover full tuition costs. Top students with high standardized test scores are eligible for these full scholarships.

Student Life

Student life is very active at Tulane University. There are more than two hundred campus organizations that include intramural sports, fraternities, and sororities. Students can also assist Tulane's television station. Tulane has implemented programs to keep its students safe and secure. There are student organizations for both graduate and undergraduate students.
