Strayer University was founded by Dr. S. Irving Strayer. He set up a small college in Maryland called Strayer's Business College of Baltimore City in 1892. The school has since expanded its educational programs and services. It has opened 47 more branches in North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, and Washington D.C.

When the school became licensed to grant Bachelor of Science degrees in 1969, the school was renamed as Strayer College. In 1987, the school began giving Master of Science degrees.

Strayer Education, Inc. was established in 1996 to take Strayer College public and to increase capital for development. Creation of an online program was included in the development.

Strayer University now has more than 32,000 students and still continues to accomplish its mission to make education achievable for working adults.

Strayer University was created to help the educational needs of working students. To achieve this, the university provides education in the following areas:

  • Information Technology (IT)
  • Management
  • Business
  • Public Administration
  • Health Administration Services

There are more than 75 campuses throughout the United States. Campus locations include Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Washington, DC, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia.
