Project Management Training

Overview

Project managers plan and organize short-term and long-term projects in a variety of companies and industries. In many organizations, the project manager is responsible for putting a plan into practice and keeping the plan on track. The following phases are components for project management: feasibility studies, project planning, implementation, evaluation, and support/maintenance. In many companies, project managers are expected to manage and oversee major changes.

Students can pursue project management degrees at the associate's, master's, and doctorate levels. The time to successfully complete a course in project management can range from 1 to 5 years. Colleges provide options for both part-time and full-time courses of study.

A master's degree in project management involves advanced studies in managerial accounting, managerial economics, introduction to project management, statistical models, technology and innovation management, organization theory and design, and management models.

Well trained project managers are in high demand in a variety of businesses and organizations. Project managers can work in a variety of fields including construction, manufacturing, government, consulting, aerospace training, education, health care, real estate, and telecommunication. Many people who earn degrees in project management decide to become self-employed consultants. Others prefer to work with a company or employer. The average income of a project manager is generally around $70,000 per year.

A bachelor's degree program may cost at least $100 per credit hour.

The College of Continuing Education at the University of Minnesota provides a project management certificate program. Ashford University, Walden University, Boston University, and Kaplan University also offer programs in project management.

Testing & Preparation

Many full time project management courses require personal reference letters. Admission to master's degree program is based on undergraduate degree program credits. Applicants must submit a high school diploma or equivalent for admission to undergraduate programs in project management. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) scores are also required for admission.
