Material Engineering Degrees
Overview
Every item we perceive in our world is made of materials. By manipulating those materials, we create thousands of products. You can enhance your knowledge about these materials with the material engineering degree. This degree involves a broad range of study including extracting variable minerals and metals from ores, production of steel, development, and fabrication of pure metals, alloys, etc. The material engineering educates you in researching on existing material in an effort to discover new materials.
You can pursue the material engineering either as an associate, bachelor, masters, or a doctorate degree. The duration of the undergraduate degrees may extend to four years and doctorate degrees which range anywhere between one and two years. The duration PhD programs may vary from four years to six years. The curriculum of the material engineering includes, mathematics, basic sciences, engineering science and design courses, general education component, learning about materials such as ceramics, electronic materials, metals, and polymer. Students with biomaterials as the major take up additional biology course. Certain colleges also arrange for training in real time environment.
Benefits
Most of the fields in science and engineering are involved in development of materials. There are varied field in which a material engineer can choose to work such as nanotechnology, micro technology, crystallography, metallurgy, and tribology. A material engineer acts as an expert in connecting the structure, process, and other related activities, and hence they are high in demand always. A material engineer's salary ranges between $50,000 and $65,000 annually on an average.
Costs
Material engineering is a course which involves lots of practical studies. This has effected to a high cost for study of course. The cost of an undergraduate degree ranges around $39,000 per year. You may have to shell out about $55,000 on an average for a doctorate degree and $10,000 per semester on an average for a PhD degree. This includes only the tuition fees. Additional expenses include food, lodging, and accommodation.
Schools
There are many colleges and universities in the United States of America which provides material engineering degrees. Purdue University School of Materials Engineering, Georgia Tech College of Engineering, and Florida International University are some of the colleges which provide material engineering degrees.
Testing & Preparation
If you wish to pursue the material engineering degree, you should be mathematically skilled as a basic requirement. You should have a completed high school certificate with the minimum Grade Point Average of 3.4. You should also take up the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination. If you wish to obtain the material engineer license, then you will need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, which is taken after graduation. After four years of experience in material engineering field, you can take up the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam to be certified completely.
Financial Aid
The cost of pursuing a degree in material engineering is quite expensive when compared to the other degrees. Choose schools and colleges which provide in house scholarships and aids. You can also opt for part time jobs, for reducing your financial burden. The Federal Student Aid and USA Funds are the federal provisions of financial aid and scholarships that students may apply for. You can also approach Scholarship Experts or private banks like Citibank and Fifth Third Bank to obtain loans.
