Overview

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test that has been prepared by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). These tests are taken by students who are applying for admission for MBA or other graduate management programs. The GMAT test is conducted only in English and it tests analytical writing, quantitative, and verbal skills.

In the United States, the GMAT test is a computer-based test and consists of three sections. The first section of the test is the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The section consists of two writing tasks where the first is an analysis of an issue and the second task is the analysis of an argument. The AWA is always found at the beginning of the GMAT test and test takers are given 30 minutes to complete each writing task. The second section of the GMAT test is the quantitative section. This section tests the student's knowledge on arithmetic, elementary algebra, and common geometry through questions on data sufficiency and problem solving. There are 37 multiple choice questions in this section and test takers have a maximum of 75 minutes to complete these questions. The third section of the GMAT test is the verbal section. This section has 41 multiple choice questions that include reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. The maximum time limit to complete this section is 75 minutes.

In addition, pretest questions are asked along with the standard questions in various sections. These questions cannot be identified as pretest questions, so it is important to answer all the questions. Pretest questions are normally not scored. You can find examples of such questions on the GMAC's website. A lot of test takers preparing for the GMAT exam spend thousands of dollars on GMAT test prep courses. They would probably be better off with a couple of GMAT test study guides and practice tests.

When registering, all necessary fees must be paid by the test taker. If registering by phone or online, fees can be paid with a debit or a credit card. You can pay the fee using a cashier's check, personal check, or a money order if you are registering though mail. The fee for the actual test is around $250 but there is no charge for preparatory help.
