Essays

Overview

For many, the idea of writing an essay is unpleasant; but perhaps the trouble lies not in the action itself, but in the motivation. When you look at an essay as simply an assignment to be completed, it becomes a chore rather than a helpful process. If you were to change your perspective and look at essays as study aids, you might begin to see that those hours you spend writing your essay were hours well spent.

Essays can be defined in a number of ways. For some, these are short answers to questions on a test. For others, they are papers that you write on a particular subject for a class. No matter how essays may be defined for you and for your classroom, they offer great potential during your study times.

English class is probably the first class you think about when it comes to essays. As you begin to study for a test about a particular book, for example, you should think about questions that your teacher might ask. You may even find sample essay questions online that can help you start thinking about the upcoming test. In order to study all that, however, you have to write out the answers to these questions just as you wood on test day. By practicing your answers, you can breeze through your testing process and garner better grades.

Benefits

Essays can benefit you indifferent ways. For example, science can provide numerous essay writing opportunities. When you want to understand the process of photosynthesis, you might write out an essay that explains the process. The more you write the answers, the more you will commit them to memory.

Some people have also found essays to be helpful with math equations and history class, where you have to remember the chain of events in different time periods. No matter what subjects you have on your plate this semester, you can incorporate the use of essays into your study time.

What makes these essays so effective? By making your brain think about the logical chain of events or think about the large ideas of a subject, you can begin to approach your class and its topics from a broader viewpoint. This allows you to understand subjects instead of simply memorizing what happens. When you can stop and explain how something happens, that's when you know you've really learned the material.

It never hurts to think like your teacher and come up with potential questions for the upcoming test. Write them out as essays and you are sure to find the tests much easier and the material more memorable.
